Friday Favorites: Ireland

Anyone else ridiculously happy for a 3-day weekend?  I need a vacation.  Ha ha, just kidding.  I have something fun planned for Saturday!  That’s all I’m going to say.  I want to keep you in suspense 😉

I plan to bore you with more pictures from Ireland.  Here goes…

Pub Crawling
It’s no secret that Matt and I like beer.  But we also like to hop from bar to bar.  When we go on vacation, we always investigate where the good bars are and try to make our own bar crawl.  Ireland is the perfect place for pub crawling.  I swear pubs out number people in some places!  Here are a few of our favorites.

Kilkenny
This little town is a few hours southwest of Dublin.  Matt and I passed through here on our way to Kinsale.  We loved it and wished we would have stayed the night (hate when that happens!).  It’s a small town but not too small and so quaint.

Temple Bar
I saved the best for last.  Our most fun night was at the Temple Bar in Dublin.  We stumbled in here thinking it would be super touristy and we would stay for just 1 pint.  It wasn’t that touristy at all (sidenote:  Matt and I hate to look like tourists on vacation.  Sometimes it’s inevitable but we try to avoid it at all costs).  We saw 2 guys setting up their guitars (and banjo!) and waited for them to begin.  Thank god we did because they were incredible.  So, so talented.  They had everyone in the bar up on their feet.  I even bought their CD during a break, which is something I never do.  They are called All Folked Up (interesting) and I can’t find any website for them other than some YouTube videos.

Have a great Memorial Day weekend!  Stay tuned for my recap of Saturday fun!

Review of the FIRST Training Plan

May 4, 2011 by Kristy 6 Comments

I never mentioned the actual name of the marathon I’m running on 9/11. It’s the Leigh Valley Marathon (or Via Marathon). It’s a point-to-point course starting in Allentown, PA and ending in Easton, PA. The course was designed by the wonderful Bart Yasso! I love Bart!

I wanted to do a review of the FIRST training plan, which I used for the NJ Marathon. For a description of the plan and the modifications I made, please see this post. Overall, I really liked it and will be using it again (with modifications) for the LVM.

What I liked:
1. The FIRST program has specific Boston qualifying plans. For NJM, I used the 3:50 plan and I liked that all my workouts were focused on getting me to run a 3:50 marathon.

2. Nothing but quality workouts. There are 3 key runs per week: speed, tempo, and long. I added a 4th run each week (an easy run) to increase my overall mileage. These key runs were hard but since my overall mileage was lower, my body could handle them.

3. The speed workouts each week nearly killed me; but they absolutely without a doubt made me faster.

4. The tempo runs were manageable and I was able to do them without too much difficultly.

5. I felt the long runs were a little easy. I often ran faster than I was supposed to but I generally do that anyway (see this post for an explanation). My endurance is much greater than my speed and this training plan made that very apparent as I was sucking wind at the track!

6. I only had 1 case of “brick legs”. Usually when I train for a marathon, this happens a few times. Again, I attribute this to less overall mileage.

7. Running 4 days a week allowed more time for yoga, which I desperately needed during this training cycle.

What I did not like:

1. Even though running 4 days a week was a plus, I had to get over feeling like a lazy slug. I have always run 5 days a week, with 2 rest days. But I really wanted to make yoga a top priority so I kept to the 4-days-a-week running regime. With 3 tough runs a week and 1 easy run, I don’t think running a 5th day would have any added value.

2. My overall mileage was low. I had to get over this too. I maxed out at 43 miles per week! My body doesn’t thrive well on high mileage (I consider that to be 60s and 70s) but in previous training cycles I was getting into the 50s. It was hard to not see those numbers climb higher than 43 but I think my legs were thankful.

3. This wasn’t an issue for me but I want to give warning to anyone thinking of using this plan. There is no base building phase. Most plans have you build mileage first (slowly and safely) before you do speed work. With the FIRST plan, you literally “hit the ground running” (pun intended) with speed work. I wouldn’t recommend this plan for beginners. If you don’t have a strong base of 30 miles per week established add about 6 weeks onto this training plan to get your base building time in. You’ll be less likely to get injured.

What training plan are you currently using? Or are you winging it?  I love seeing what plans people use to train. It’s such a matter of preference.

A nice, easy run to shake out the legs for tomorrow’s dress rehearsal (that’s how I like to think of the last 20-miler before the taper).  It looks like the weather is going to cooperate too – high of 59, low of 48…that’s shorts-wearing weather!

Time for a random edition of Friday Favorites!

Saint Joseph’s University
Oh, I know this is so obvious.  But what would Friday Favorites be without one of my all-time favorite things?!  Brief background for newer readers:  SJU is where Matt and I went to college (and met).  Our dog is named Hawk (after the SJU mascot).  My brother is also a SJU alum.  We are slightly fanatical about what I consider the best school on earth.  The proof is in the pictures…

Where Matt proposed...right on SJU's campus
Post-proposal pic taken by the SJU president who just happened to be walking around campus after we got engaged.
Naturally our wedding pictures were taken at SJU. Some of our bridal party were SJU alumni.
Walking down Lapsley Lane.
We even had the SJU Hawk come to our cocktail hour!

Nuts, right?  My sister-in-law says it’s a cult.

Wawa
Wawa is a convenience store (think upscale 7-11, minus the funny smell that most 7-11s have) found in PA, NJ, MD, VA, and DE.  Wawa is awesome.  Good coffee, no surcharge ATMs, and actual healthy food options (although I often find myself in there getting ice cream).  Sorry to the folks outside of these 5 states…you are missing out.

Yes, you do!

Flats
I think I’m officially giving up on wearing heels.  OK, I rarely where heels to begin with but I’ve been wearing flats to work for the past couple of weeks.  Yesterday I wore my boots, with a small heel, and I could not wait to get them off.  Not to mention my ankles were wobbly all day.  They are just no good for you….they are torturous!  Jen did a post a few months ago about high heels, bringing up some great points why we should not be wearing them.  At least I don’t have many heels to swear off…luckily my standard uniform of Uggs, flip flops, and running shoes are all flat!

Is anyone obsessed with their college like me?

Any thoughts on heels?  Yay or nay?

Weight Gain and Marathon Training

Nothing too remarkable about this run.  It was cold (again) and my hands were cold (again)…even though I brought a change of gloves.  I’m really sick and tired of this cold.  Spring, get here and stay here!

I wanted to address weight gain and marathon training.  I have gained 5 lbs this training cycle.  This isn’t uncommon for me; it has happened before.  My clothes aren’t tighter and I don’t feel that much different.  I don’t weigh myself religiously – just every now and then (that’s how I found out I was +5).  And no, this weight gain is not muscle…I can assure you of that!

It’s more common for runners to gain weight during marathon training than lose it.  It seems hard to believe that you can gain weight while doing all that running but it happens.  Non-runners ask me all the time how much weight I can lose when training.  You should see their faces when I tell them my weight remains the same or I even (gasp!) gain weight.  Training for a marathon should never be used for weight loss.  Your appetite is out of control, to put it mildly.  If you have every been around me during training, you know how much pizza I can put away!

My issue (and probably the reason for my weight gain) is my out of control sweet tooth.  This began around Christmas (which I think is normal; everyone overindulges in sweets during that time) but it has not gone away!  Coincidently, I started training for this marathon during Christmas.  I often use sweets as a “reward” for training.  And that is where the problem lies.  I really shouldn’t be rewarding myself with a DQ Blizzard after every long run!  Totally unnecessary.  The cravings for sweets are so strong that I just give in.  We can’t have sweets in the house – they are gone instantly.  I’m not one of those people who can have 3 Hershey Kisses to satisfy my sweet tooth!

So my solution is to cut out ALL sweets until after the marathon.  I gotta do this cold turkey.  I think by taking a drastic approach (i.e., total withdrawal) I can “calm” my never ending desire for sweets.  Ugh, it’s gonna get ugly around here 😉

Funny thing is these extra 5 lbs don’t make me feel sluggish when I run!  I feel so strong.  Odd, huh?  And no, it’s still not muscle!

Yesterday I went to Whole Foods to pick up some more crack White Chocolate Wonderful.  I was about to also pick up Dark Chocolate Dreams but then realized that would be too close to a sweet.  Chocolate + PB = Reese’s Cup.  Maybe after May 1!

Stocking up. Taking a picture of your cart is normal. I don't think anyone saw me.

Do you reward yourself with treats during training?  Ever gain weight while training?

18 miles (12 outside / 6 treadmill)

It’s freezing here.  The wind chill was 19 degrees when I started running (Spring is in the air, huh?).  I dressed appropriately and felt warm enough except my gloves got wet really fast.  I normally carry a dry pair of gloves but today I didn’t.  Big mistake.  Around 11 miles, my left hand went from numb and tingly to downright hurting.  I knew I needed warm, dry gloves so I ran back to my house which was only a 1/2 mile from where I was.  My intention was to grab gloves and head back out.  Once I got inside I just headed down to my treadmill for an additional 6 miles.  When did I become such a wimp?  About 2 months ago I ran in 0 degree weather!  Apparently I get a taste of Spring and can no longer hang in cold weather.

This week’s Friday Favorites are all about summer. I’m trying to think warm thoughts since it feels like winter…

Summer Running
– The obvious favorite here is the weather. Give me hot and humid any day! You don’t have to worry about snow, sleet, ice, bitter cold wind, and if it rains, no big deal! Running in the summer rain is refreshing (minus the thunder and lightening).
– I love not having to obsessively stalk weather.com. It’s sunny and warm every day.
– Tanks and shorts are my summer running uniform. No need for tons of layers that take forever to put on.
– Since the sun rises earlier (for you AM runners) and sets later (for you PM runners), you can do longer weekday runs. I love to be out the door at 5:45AM and knock out a medium long run before work (maybe that’s just me though?).

Grilling/Eating/Drinking on the Deck
When Matt and I were looking for a house one of our requirements was for the house to have a deck. We have a deck that is totally private (no sharing hamburgers with the neighbors) and it backs up to trees. We eat out on the deck (and grill) almost every night. On Fridays, we have some drinks Miller Lites and it is so relaxing.

Clearly this is not our deck...enjoying beers on a deck in Santorini, Greece.

Jersey Shore
My parents live at the shore (they retired there) and we love to go down and, again, hang on their deck.

The whole family at the Shore - can you spot Hawk?
My Bachelorette Party at the Shore

Summer Weddings
There’s a reason Matt and I got married in the summer!  Luckily I have 3 weddings to go to this summer (hi Camille, Wendy, and Amanda)!

I think we were all starting to sweat at this point!

What are some of your favorite summertime things?

WOW!

7 miles easy

10:00 pace

7 miles on the boring treadmill while watching Teen Mom.  It’s freezing here and doing the rain/snow thing.  I kept the pace real easy since I have an 18-miler on schedule for tomorrow.

Moving on to more important stuff…welcome new readers!  To say I’m overwhelmed by being yesterday’s featured cat lady would be an understatement!  I’m still in the process of reading all of your comments (thank you!) and plan on responding to each and every one of them (all while stalking your blogs).  To bring you up to speed, I figured I’d include some running fun facts in this post.

  • I’m training for my 8th marathon, the NJ Marathon, on May 1.  I’m thinking of sporting a Snooki-esque bumpit and faux tan for the marathon….to, ya know, blend in.  I kid, I kid…my parents live at the Jersey Shore.
  • You can read about my training plan here.
  • I’m obsessed with the Boston Marathon (trying to qualify, that is).  I don’t plan on qualifying on May 1 (I hope to run a 3:50); just hoping to get one step closer.
  • I LOVE long runs – especially 18-20 milers.
  • I LOATHE speed work but do it each week.
  • I incorporated yoga into my training cycle this time around and it has made a huge difference in my flexibility.  I didn’t realize how tight my hips and hamstrings were from running until I went to a class.

Speaking of yoga, last night I went to RYAH for a 75-min vinyasa class.  Maura was the instructor; I’ve taken her Wake Up Yoga class before and really like her.  Her class last night was kinda intense (holding poses for a long time) and kinda relaxing (letting us stay in child’s pose for just a wee bit longer).  The only problem?  The music!  Didn’t help that I was right next to the speaker either.  I know I tend to fixate on things while practicing yoga but this was like a techno song that never ended (but it was chanting…nonstop).  During savasana all I could concentrate on was “om shanti om shanti om shanti shanti om”.  Over and over.  Eek!  I’m still singing chanting it!

Is it just me or do you fixate on certain things during a yoga class?  Or while running?  Sometimes during races, if I’m iPodless, the sound of feet smacking the pavement gets to me after awhile!
