DQ Blizzard

Friday Favorites: Training Essentials

March 1, 2012 by Kristy 14 Comments

There are obvious training essentials (Garmin, dry-fit gear, shoes, fuel, etc.) and not-so-obvious essentials. Here’s what’s keeping me sane, healthy, and hydrated as I approach the Monster Month…

DQ Blizzards
Today is a big day. My local DQ is re-opening today after being closed for the winter (that should be illegal). How was I supposed to train for a marathon without my beloved Blizzard? It has been a long few months. My mouth is practically watering. Turns out, I have a 20-miler on Saturday. Guess who is enjoying a Blizzard on Saturday?

Tennis Ball / Hand Sanitizer
These are grouped together only because they were sitting on my desk together. Obviously hand sanitizer keeps those nasty work germs away (people, if you are sick – stay home!). But the tennis ball relieves piriformis pain from sitting too long. I try and move around every hour but sometimes it’s not practical. Put the tennis ball under your butt and…relief! People at work already think I’m a little nuts anyway.

Compression Shorts
I’ve already posted about my love for Aspaeris compression shorts. These little (very little) shorts get the job done. At this point I’m wearing them to bed every night so my legs are refreshed for my next run.

Sleep
So, so important as I increase my mileage. Since I don’t have kids I have the luxury of making it a priority. I generally get 8-9 hours every night. I’m usually asleep before my head hits the pillow.

Amphipod Water Bottle
I’ve been using the same handheld water bottle for years now. I love this thing! I usually carry it through the winter since I dehydrate so easily. I never even notice that I’m carrying it.

Anything else to add?

Do you use a handheld water bottle?  Or fuel belt?  Or CamelBak?

Do you love Blizzards?  I can’t imagine someone saying no!

Weekend Recap: Celebration

February 12, 2012 by Kristy 15 Comments

Missed the first recap of the weekend?  Read it here.

On Saturday night, Matt and I got our Groupon on at Spamps to celebrate my birthday.  Yes, that is the name of the restaurant.  It’s short for Spampinato, the owner’s last name.  Dinner was good but dessert…oh my, one of my favorites.  Chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream.

Initially it didn’t come with ice cream (can you imagine?).  I requested it.  You can’t eat a lava cake without melted ice cream drizzling down.  I turned my flash off to take the picture.  I didn’t want strange glances.

Matt and I went to the bar afterwards for a drink but were home by 9.  You need to make a beeline out of Spamps before 10pm before it turns into a meat market.

Proof that it always snows around my birthday.  Excuse my demonic eyes.

Matt, hating life because I’m taking his picture.  Do it for the blog, Matt.

I woke up Sunday morning and I was feeling the 20-miler from Saturday and 48 miles in general for the week.  I knew I was in for a treat at barre class.

My legs shaked non-stop in class.  My quads were screaming and I could no longer tuck and squeeze.  No one else’s legs were shaking, I appeared to be so out of shape.  So barre class the day after a 20-miler is not ideal.  Lesson learned.

What’s your favorite dessert?  The lava cake is pretty high up there but I do love myself a DQ Blizzard.

Ever feel completely inadequate and out of shape during strength training or yoga because of running (even though you are clearly in shape)?

Friday Favorites

October 14, 2011 by Kristy 15 Comments

10/14/11

I’m bringing back Friday Favorites…at least this week anyway.  Months ago I ran out of things that could be “favorite” worthy so I stopped posting about it.  Matt suggested Friday Rants, where I could probably go on and on, but I thought that would be too negative.  Here goes…

Chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream
Delicious!  One of my favorite desserts, aside from my beloved DQ Blizzard.   And it MUST be served with vanilla ice cream…whipped cream would be nice too.

A larger scoop of ice cream is necessary

Deep tissue massage
I got my first deep tissue massage last night and it was heavenly.  In the past I stuck to the traditional Swedish massage but for my hamstring’s sake I went with deep tissue.  It was fabulous but the massage therapist could have dug a little deeper, especially on my right hammie, hip, and glute.  I wanted it to hurts-so-good.  Unfortunately, it’s an expensive favorite too 🙁

Pinterest
I’m not crafty or creative in the least so it’s a shock that I enjoy perusing Pinterest.  I don’t even use it to its full potential but I love just looking at all the home ideas.  We are re-doing both of our bathrooms and it’s great to visualize different colors and ideas.  Using door knobs as towels hooks?  Genius (pic here if you think it sounds weird)!  Search on “running” and you may lose your mind.  So many great quotes.  A few of my favorites…

Your turn!  Share a Friday Favorite or two!

Ugh

June 13, 2011 by Kristy 12 Comments

After the knee fiasco on Saturday things got better and then got worse.  I had a great time at the wedding (more on that later) but tossed and turned all Saturday night because my body just ached.  Not long run aches, flu aches.  I was so uncomfortable I barely slept.  I woke up feeling awful, kinda like the flu – achy, feverish, chills.  I took some Advil and we made our way back home.  We got home, I slept for a few hours, parked myself on the couch, and watched TV.  I also begged Matt to get me a DQ Blizzard (hey, there was nothing wrong with my stomach).  Since I know I can’t have the flu, I’m chalking it up to the damn tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis vaccine.  Not only does my arm hurt, it made me feel crappy…for two days!  I’m home from work today because I still don’t feel good.  This needs to end now.  I hate being sick.

Onto more fun stuff!  The wedding was a good time and Camille never looked happier.  Some pictures…
