Saturday
I had 20 miles on dock and it was nice and warm. It actually rained most of the run but it was that warm that the rain felt nice. I love runs like that. I finished 20 miles in 2:52 (8:36 average pace). I was shooting for closer to 8:30 average pace but I’ll take it.
I encountered 2 of my running pet peeves on Saturday. #1 – running so close (i.e., up my ass) that I can hear your breathing and your footfalls and #2 – guys that like to “race” when a girl passes them or may pass them (also need to add that when you pass them, it’s not without comment – “didn’t know we were racing” – yes, this was said to me a few weeks ago when I passed a group of guys).
Let’s call offender #1 Mr. A. Mr. A and I converge on the trail at the bottom of a hill. Mr. A is ahead of me and I am keeping a respectable distance as to not commit pet peeve #1. My pace is steady at 8:30 and Mr. A was probably pushing 8:15ish. There was no need for me to pass him. Mr. A turns around and sees me and then takes off. Takes off as in 7:30 pace, which is pretty impressive considering he appeared to be in his 50s. Apparently, I was a threat.
Offender #2, or Mr. B, is older – maybe 60s? As I get closer I realize I’m going to pass him and I do it quickly and mutter “good morning”. Well Mr. B wasn’t having that. He picks up the pace and I can hear him right behind me. Mr. B is now committing pet peeves #1 and #2 so I’m pissed. I speed up to make it hard for him to keep up.
As I speed up I gain some momentum on Mr. A. He turns around (again) and takes off (again). Now all 3 of us are running down a steep hill at 7:40 pace. Thankfully I had to cross the street at the bottom of the hill and left Mr. A and Mr. B to duke it out themselves.
All I can say is, WHY? Matt said I was just as bad for speeding up but there was no way I was letting some old dude pass me.
Sunday
Since this week was a drop back week, I was supposed to run 3 easy miles, bringing me to 43 for the week. I ditched the run and watched a movie with Matt instead. I love Sunday morning movie watching! I realized that 43 miles wasn’t much of a drop back and 40 sounded better.
After the movie I hit up lululemon (I had a gift card from my birthday). I got another Racerback Tank (love them) and something different for barre class – the No Limit Tank.

Experience any running pet peeves of your own this weekend?
Do I have any male readers? Can you please explain why this bothers guys so much? Other runners (male, female, old, young) pass me all the time and it doesn’t bother me one bit!

Ooh see?
I love the No Limits tank on you.
Crappers 🙂 I want. I want.

Haha, I wish I had a video of this exchange! If you want to REALLY piss people off, pass them when running with a dog. I don’t know why, but that is rubbing salt in a wound.
Cute shirt!

Considering how slow I am, I never exeperience what you describe. However, I do know it’s awkward if you approach a runner or vice versa and find yourselves at the same pace. It’s like driving, usually you don’t want to be side by side.
So I usually adjust as necessary. I have found this same scenario to be even more annoying in a road race. Once did a small one and guy kept coming up by me and then walking to fall back, over and over. I was ready to be like “Just run the whole thing already!!”

That top is super-cute!!! My next free Saturday I am making a point to get down to KOP and get some lulu gear!!!!
I hate the close-heavy breathers–ugh, so disgusting!
I also get annoyed when you are passing someone (running towards one another and passing) and they don’t say hi, or nod or anything…that’s just rude.
Fortunately I had a pet-peeve-free run on Saturday. I did not see even one other person running Saturday morning while I was out…I guess because of the rain?

I hate when people run so close behind me that I can hear them breathing. It drives me crazy. The racing thing is annoying too. People get annoyed with me when I pass them pushing the stroller. I get some seriously dirty looks! That is a super cute shirt!

Those two drive me CRAZY too! I once got the stink eye from a guy bec I passed him. Dude…grow up!
Rachel says
I am cracking up because, well, uh, I was a heavy breather the last 3-miles of the 18-miles we covered. I was embarrassed. I apologized to Courtney and she said, “This is the worst I’ve heard you…” Hahaha. But all laughing matters aside, I’m thinking of going to the doctor to have it checked out. I’ve been experiencing some shortness of breath and Pedro claims I am coughing at night a lot… Hopefully it’s nothing serious…
I LOVE LULULEMON!!! SO jealous of your gift card. I know, it’s your birthday… Someone best get me a gift card to that place. HAHA
Great run!!! YOU ARE FASSSSST!!!
Kate @ NaturaStride says
AH! Both situations have happened to me, and I especially hate the “Offender #2” situation. I don’t know how to resolve this. So annoying!
Cute tank!
Beth @ RUNNING around my kitchen says
I totally agree with you! Although I’ve never gotten that. “so we’re racing comment?” – seriously?! It’s the same as when you are driving with cruise control on and pass a car and then that car suddenly passes you and then slows down again….meanwhile you know your speed stays the same – huge pet peeve of mine (as if you couldn’t tell).
Love the Lululemon gear!

Oh I love that tank top!
ugh I hate people who have issues with being passed!
I did experience one of my pet peeves this weekend in my 5k. NYRR does corrals so usually the situation isn’t too bad but I just found there were sooooo many people who were somehow slower in front of me and I am not sure how they got there. I was still having to weave around people in the last mile going up a big hill. Exactly when I did not want to weave…
Amanda - RunToTheFinish says
ohh those are both annoying! i have to say though in miami the worst is that people don’t obey the idea of which side to use… so like driving i stay to the right at all times so we can pass…but they refuse to do that so i’m hoping on and off sidewalks and such. bizarre

I get really self conscious when someone is close to my space, I’m afraid I’m getting in their way. On the trail it makes me nervous because if they lose their footing and take me out I’ll be peeeeeeved.
Terzah says
I was looking to see if any guys answered your question. None so far! :^)
Sokphal @ Life as a Classroom says
(Rolling my eyes). Men need to get over it. Most of the runners I know and see on the trails/races are women so it makes sense that we are going to pass them. I have noticed that when I pass people on the trail and then I turn around at my half way point and pass them again, I try to smile or say “hi”. They usually aren’t having it. Oh well.
Great time on your 20 miler and cute tank!
David says
I have basically the same two pet-peeves, but they are unrelated to gender. If pet peeve #1 occurs for two long (the tailgater), then I usually pick up my pace not to avoid getting passed, but to avoid someone breathing in my ear. I don’t know why I never think to slow down instead…
I noticed that the folks who can’t handle being passed (okay, I said folks, but you’re right, they’re pretty much all guys) tend to be the ones who are either a little passed their running prime or a little out of shape–people with something to prove. The best way to cut the racing? Start talking to them. Works almost every time.
Meggie says
Love the no limit tank! It will be perfect for barre class.
And, aren’t whole numbers better than odd numbers?! (43 vs 40 miles).
Hmm..running pets peeves…I don’t like the racing thing, just because it takes the focus of what I want it to be and onto something else. And tourists who take up the whole road in central park….
Kelly @ Laughter, Strength, and Food says
Oh my gosh! I would have been so annoyed! It’s really okay for people to run at different speeds. I used to encounter this one girl on my running trail that would do the same thing…speed up as I approached her. It’s one thing to use someone else as motivation, but on the other hand, there is no reason to freak out if someone is going to run faster!
Meredith @ DareYouTo says
Ugh that is so annoying and unnecessary. I sympathize! But that’s an adorable shirt and LuLuLemon was able to ease your frustration I hope 🙂
Alyssa says
Ew, a guy was breathing all loudly and disgustingly close to me at the end of the Myrtle Beach marathon and I couldn’t shake him and I was about to flip my shit. Some guys are just insecure I guess. Nice job on the run!
Kelly says
OMG! I had a similar guy on my run this morning! He sped up as soon as he heard me coming and realized I was a girl. At first I was like oh hell no, but then I let him go. It should also be noted that he was probably a lunatic, since he howled when running under foot bridges and jumped up to touch tree branches a few times. Oh, NYC. nice running!!
Amanda says
I can’t stand hearing other people breathe loudly close to me. This has really only happened in races. So I guess at least they are working hard. But if it bugs me that much maybe I should bring music to drown it out. The worst is when they are breathing so much faster than I am and hearing it starts to disrupt my steady breathing.
There was some unintentional passing last week. A super fast guy came up behind me while I was walking on a rest interval during speed work. I thought I was alone on the path so his sudden breathing scared the crap out of me but I moved over so he could power past me. Soon after, he stopped running and began to walk. And seconds after that, my Garmin beeped to indicate my rest interval was over and it was time for the next speed interval, so I then ran past him while he was cooling down. I really hope he heard the beeping of my watch to know that I wasn’t trying to pass him on purpose!
