snow love

January 27, 2013 by Kristy 13 Comments

Yes, snow love.

As much as I whine about running in the winter (and whine even more about running in the snow), Saturday’s long run changed my perspective a bit.

This week was abnormally cold.  Bitter, biting, down-to-your-bones cold.  Thankfully this isn’t the norm in Philly or I would have to relocate to San Francisco.

On Monday I took advantage of the “warm” weather and day off and knocked out 10 miles with Abby.

Tuesday through Thursday, I stayed indoors.  I took 2 barre classes, did a quick run on the treadmill, and took a rest day.  All strategically planned around the weather.

On Friday I braved the cold for 9 miles.  It wasn’t so bad.

We got a few inches of snow on Friday night and I thought I may have to treadmill my way through 16 miles on Saturday.  I can’t even fathom being on the treadmill that long (I don’t know how some of you do it…it’s impressive).

I hit the trails, Yaktrax in tow, and figured if the cold/snow/ice was really bad I could always finish the run on the treadmill (or call it day).

I was pleasantly surprised!!  It was wonderful…definitely one of my top 10 long runs ever.  I didn’t want it to end.

My version of playing in the snow.

It may not be the Marin Headlands, but I’ll take it.

Did you brave the cold this week and run outside?  How did you stay warm?  I wore my ski gloves with a pair of those cheap stretchy gloves underneath.  As long as my hands are warm, I stay warm.

Isn’t that the way it goes….the run you think will be super hard turns out to be one of your top 10 🙂

    Nice work!

brrr..below 20 and I am a wimp! I am horrible about running in snow bc I always freak out that I am going to end up falling and breaking something…give me clean roads over snow any day! Great job getting out there and running! Always great when a run turns into a great run too!

Is that the Wissahickon area? I was there on Saturday morning with my running club! 😀 It was the first time I’ve ever run in the snow, I agree with you – it was wonderful!

I love the pictures! I love running in the snow, there is something almost magical about it and it’s normally quieter and so pretty. I’m jealous!

I don’t really like running in the snow at all. Luckily nyc doesn’t get much and when I am home in Ann Arbor I stick to plowed streets! THe cold I don’t mind as much…although I do prefer the 30/40s 🙂

Wow, I love running, but “didn’t want it to end” – I’m not sure I could describe any of my long runs like that! Nice work! I resorted to the treadmill once, but other than that, bundled up! Of course, in MD it never gets THAT cold. I really need some yaktraxx.

I felt the same way! I knocked off 14 miles in the snow and loved it! It was def. long slow running and it felt so good (felt like I could have gone for longer)! I normally would have wanted to go faster (and eventually burn-out out quicker). Oh, when will I ever learn? 🙂 My run was pretty, but your view was def. breath taking!

yay, I’m glad you had a great run! I love winter running, and one of the reasons why is because there are less people out there braving the weather and things feel so peaceful and quiet. Snow always adds to that effect too 🙂 I am happy out in the cold as long as my hands are warm – this past week I wore three layers of gloves and it worked like a charm!

That is so pretty. While I love winter running (I don’t mind it at all), nothing is worse than winter running with a cold. So yeah, I kept that indoors.

I truly hate LR on the treadmill, but yeah, sometimes it’s better than no run.

Hope you have a wonderful Monday.

We hardly ever get snow around here that sticks around after the sun comes up, so I have very little experience running it! The pictures sure look pretty though 🙂

LOVE running in the cold! Ran one of my best 10 milers in Detroit snow over the holidays. Your Philly pics are gorgeous!

    Gorgeous images from your run!

I almost always go for a run outdoors if at all possible. Decided to call the one tonight because it was icy though.
