10: the hours of sleep I got last night. We took a red eye flight home from Kauai and the dude next to me was very lax in minding his personal space (I was sitting in the middle). I normally sleep fine on a plane but every time I nodded off I felt a strange arm or leg mosey over into my limited personal space. Eww. I was practically in Matt’s lap by the time we landed.
236: number of unread emails when I returned to work today. I was pleasantly surprised!
0: number of miles ran this morning. It was raining when I woke up. Normally I run in the rain but it gets tricky when it’s an “in the office” day (M, W, Th). If my hair is soaking wet, I’ll need to wash it which adds a significant amount of time to my morning routine. Silly? Yes…but I get up in just the right amount of time to run, shower, and throw my hair into a ponytail.
14: number of miles hiked in Kauai. I already wrote about our 6-mile hike along the Kalalau Trail and on Friday we did an 8-mile hike along the Pihea Trail to the Alaka’i Swamp Trail. It was muddy and steep at parts but more than half the trail had a boardwalk to make things easier.
At the turnaround point (mile 4) you are supposed to be treated to a wonderful view of Kilohana Lookout for your efforts…weather pending. Key words right there. This is what we were supposed to see:
Beautiful, huh? (via)
Instead a cloud rolled in exactly when we got there and we saw this:
Not kidding. We were literally stuck in a cloud.
Oh well, you win some you lose some. We knew there was a possibility of a cloud rolling in and blocking the view; it was a great hike otherwise. We did meet a very friendly rat who begged for food!

Welcome home! I love the shots of your red clay hike – stellar views or not, looks like a fun day!
Looks like a great trip overall!
Did I read right that you got 10 hours of sleep on a redeye??? WOW!
One day I want to go to Hawaii!
Even with the personal space invader on the return flight it sounds like you had a wonderful trip. I hope coming back to civilization isn’t too painful after all that beautiful R&R.
still! Such a beautiful looking hike even with the cloud. I’m so jealous – sounds like you had an amazing time!

Welcome back!!! Hopefully you’ve caught up on some sleep 🙂 I can’t believe you ended up with a cloud covering your view! Still looks like a fun hike! I can’t wait – we leave next Thurs!!!!
Welcome home. Sorry that the weather is bleh. It’s like that here too. It’s that, “call out of work and stay under the covers” kind of week. I think it’s supposed to stop raining on Friday? I don’t know.
It looks like you got a lot of running/hiking/walking done in Hawaii. I bet you actually LOST weight from being there. Unless, you’re not showing us pictures of everything you ate. I think my favorite meal was always breakfast.

What a wonderful trip, darn clouds …
Back to life, back to reality. Sorry about your plane buddy – I HATE it when that happens!!
Did you see any roosters just wandering around while you were there? That was the weirdest thing in Kauai for me. Dan and I were far down some remote trail…and this rooster wanders up to us begging. I guess they are descendants of the chickens that were set free during Hurricane Ike!
Glad you had a great trip–I’m sorry about the plane though. I never sleep well on them anyway.

GORGEOUS!!! you and the moutain 🙂
man folks and spreading out on planes, that’s one that still bugs me 🙂

Welcome home!! Glad you had such a great trip – such great hikes, right?!
I would have made my husband switch seats with me! I’m just that kind of wife 🙂
236 unread emails would STRESS me out! Bummer that the cloud ruined your view but the hike looked fun anyway! Planes are such a crap shoot… my last flight I had a good seat neighbor but across the aisle there this huge guy snoring so loudly, then he’d sort of wake up and do this gross phlegmy cough. Then repeat. UGH. It’s amazing I didn’t get sick after that flight.
