Kauai Running: North Shore vs. South Shore

May 17, 2012 by Kristy 13 Comments

I love to run on vacation.  No expectations, no pressure…just run to offset dessert calories.  Or, in my case, beer calories.  It’s a great way to explore a city or a town.  I’ve managed easy 3-milers in the very early AM (before it gets ungodly hot) for the past 3 days.

We split our time in Kauai between the North Shore and South Shore.  We stayed in Princeville (at the Westin – highly recommend it) for the NS and at Poipu Beach (Sheraton – also very nice) for the SS.

The NS is definitely more scenic with views of the ocean and Na Pali Coast.  The Na Pali Coast is like the Golden Gate Bridge to me – I will never get sick of staring at it.

The SS is nice too but no mountain views.  However, it is significantly cooler with a nice ocean breeze.

The best thing about running in a beach town is you can step right outside your hotel and follow the other runners – no need to do any research.  For cities, I definitely do my homework.  I don’t want to end up in a shady area (suggestions for running in Paris/London are welcome!).

Do you run on vacation?  I love the change of scenery.  My favorite place to run is still San Fran.  I haven’t found any place that can beat it.

Paris & London. YES! I might even still have garmin data I can share. The short of it is… Just run to the river (Seine or Thames) and follow it. London also has awesome parks (Hyde, Green, St. James) that all connect and you can kind of run loops and figure 8’s to accrue mileage. I ran a lot in both cities and just LOVED it. Paris is a bit harder if you veer off the river…

I was on Oahu in March/April and ran with my husband several times. It was AMAZING (maybe because we live at altitude and it was awesome running at sea level!).

I am pretty jealous that you are in Kauai…love it there! Huge fan of the canyon and all of the trails!

I ran while I was in Greece, but I didn’t do any research beforehand. I just followed the coastline until I felt like I shouldn’t go any farther and ran back. Gorgeous views!

Running on vacation is one of my favorite things–it’s a great chance to see a new place and it’s always nice to mix up your running routine. I think DC might be my favorite place to run though I totally agree SF is wonderful too. I haven’t been to London, but I’ll say that Paris is not a great running town, though it’s still an amazing city.

Yes, I love to run when I’m in a new place, it’s the best way to see it! The pictures are amazing, looks fabulous!

I studied abroad in London and running there will depend on where you are staying….the more “downtown” it is, the tougher it will be, but there are neighborhoods and some parks where you would be able to run.

so gorgeous! Glad you’re having such a great time! I find that running on vacation often allows me to see stuff I normally wouldn’t, and I love that! Definitely agree that San Fran is the best running city, hands down. 🙂

Wow, Hawaii is so pretty…can you fly me out there?

I don’t run on most vacations because I tend to walk everywhere and will log many miles walking. However, on beach vacations (where exploring on foot isn’t really the ideal way to experience things) I spend a lot of time swimming…so I don’t run, but I swim. I usually just swim out and back and that back and forth across the beach.

I am living vicariously through you. Two years ago from tomorrow, Pedro and I were on our honeymoon in Maui. Oh, I wish I could relive that week — but just that week. I can’t imagine not having Lili. LOL — But yes, I agree w/ you. I ran there almost everyday and it had to be before 5AM when the sun came out because it was terribly HOT there. Also, it was so HILLY. Do you find the same problem?

Your pictures look amazing and YOU look amazing as always. I’m so glad you’re having a fab time. Can’t wait to hear more on your trip.

I LOVE running on vaca! It’s such an awesome way to see a new place (as some have commented)! Also, your pics are beautiful. I have always wanted to go to Hawaii. Forgetting Sarah Marshall sealed the deal. Haha! 🙂
