I Survived

June 8, 2011 by Kristy 10 Comments

6/8/11

5 miles easy  / no Garmin

Yesterday I took my first strength training class in ages and I lived to tell about it.  It wasn’t so bad actually.  I’m a little sore today but not as bad as I was expecting.  The class did confirm that my leg strength is >>>> my upper body and core strength.  This is what I would expect when my legs do all the work and my upper body and core are just along for the ride.

The class was set-up like a circuit and we did lots of different things:  kettlebells, pilates reformer, stability ball, etc.  There were only 2 students in the class (including me) which I liked.  I was able to learn each circuit with the help of the instructor.

It wasn’t terribly difficult but I’m not sure if I want anything difficult right now.  I do have to be able to run a lot so I’d like to keep myself somewhat mobile!

Speaking of running, I’ve been getting up at 5AM to run and I’m oh so tired.  I crawl into bed at 9-9:30 every night and pass out.  I love to run in the summertime but sometimes fitting it all in is hard.  We are away most weekends until August so I find myself squeezing in as much a possible Monday through Friday so I can enjoy the weekend (weddings, shore, etc.).

How do you fit running in around your social life (or life in general)?  I know there’s no magic answer.  I used to get pretty creative with fitting in my long runs when I would have plans on both Friday and Saturday nights.  But that was back in the day (my 20s) when I used to go out much more!

    Soc…ial life? What’s that? 🙂

I think I must run with my core because I don’t do any core exercises but when I go to yoga, I can plank and do other strength moves for days. Maybe I lift the baby with my core?

That’s great! I like being sore but not too sore because then I am just uncomfortable all day. I wish I could go to bed earlier. I feel l like I never get into bed before 11. Therefore I am not out till 6:30.

I always run in the morning and I don’t stay up too late. Meaning after midnight!

I feel ya on a weaker upper-half… I really need to work on core and arm strength
And although I don’t have much of a social life, when I do have events coming up, I get up at the bum crack of dawn like you and am in bed by 9 if I can. I find myself going to bed earlier and earlier these days… around 8:30 because the internship I have involves waking up at 5:30 each morning.
It seems I need at least 8.5 hours to not feel like death during the day. Gahh it seems I don’t really have any good advice, I just understand where you are coming from!

I know, I know. I would go to bed at 8:30 if I could. There’s nothing wrong with going to bed while it’s still light out, right? 😉

Congrats on the weight training! I wish you had a bodypump class near you to try because I love it! I’ll end up running early mornings in the summer because it gets so hot!

I’m soooo jealous that you get to do BodyPump! I’m sure I would be way more sore if it was a BodyPump class. I consider that “hard core” strength training 🙂

Youch… 5am. Hmm, I don’t run very far (like only 30 mins far) and don’t have much of a social life so that isn’t really a problem for me!

    1. I love, love, love kettlebells. I should email you this great kettlebell workout you could just do at home. I actually get lazy doing weights, but I know it’s so good for you. So GO YOU for getting in a routine.

    2. I prefer running first thing in the AM. Last summer was BRUTALLY HOT! I was training for Chicago Marathon and boy, oh boy was it HOT. Then I got knocked up — LOL. Training was wasted. Oh, well not so much wasted. I still got to eat what I wanted too without gaining too much weight. HA. Girl, I was up at 5 yesterday getting ready to workout and um, I fell asleep at 7:30. Pregnant or not, I’m sure that would be my bedtime.

Can we see some pre-weight training pics up on this piece? This way, you can have an entry on “The Gun Show” after a few weeks of weight training?

You are too funny!!! I didn’t know you were training for Chicago last summer! All that hot training would have come in handy since Chicago was, once again, brutal last year.

If I end up getting Cameron Diaz or Madonna-like arms, I *promise* I will post pictures!!!
