Today’s post isn’t running-related at all. It’s all about traveling!
Matt and I got our first taste of traveling on our honeymoon and since then we have not been able to stop thinking, researching, dreaming, and booking more trips. It’s funny since prior to our honeymoon, we both barely been outside the US. We didn’t step on a plane until college and grew up vacationing at the Jersey Shore (Wildwood for me, Ocean City for him). Since gallivanting around Europe in 2009, we can’t seem to get enough.
We decided to honeymoon in Europe because why the hell not? Since we both never been there, we couldn’t decide on just 1 country to visit so we went with the European cruise. The cruise itself was not our thing (old people doing the hokey pokey and macarena – no thanks), but getting to see so many European cities in 2 weeks was fantastic.
A year later we went to Australia (sidenote: our trips always fall post-marathon – no idea why 😉 We went to Australia 5 days after the Steamtown Marathon in October 2010). Words can’t describe Australia. I’ll show pictures instead.
This past May we went to Ireland (again, post-NJ Marathon). So many pubs, so little time.
NEXT UP….Kauai in May and Paris/London in June!!!
We have been thinking about Hawaii for some time now and May would be a perfect time to go (post-Boston, of course!). Paris and London we could not pass up. Matt’s brother-in-law teaches a summer course in Paris and will be there throughout June in an apartment. All we needed to do was pay for airfare. See how we couldn’t pass it up?!?! And Matt came up with the idea to tack London on (it’s only a 2 1/2 hour train ride from Paris to London). So yes, we are very excited!
My question for you…if you could plan a trip anywhere in the world, where would you go (and why)? I love hearing people’s response to this question!
Elizabeth says
Hands down – Greece.

I’ve never been to Europe, so I’d love to go there, but I’d also love to visit North Africa (Tunisia). My husband grew up all over the world so he’s already been everywhere, but I’m less well traveled.

A cruise around Europe is something we are dying to do – neither one of us has ever been. I’m also dying to go on a Safari in Africa, but my husband says he’ll never go there, so we’ll have to see. I’d also love to go to China or Japan…basically anywhere outside the US, I guess! What a great spring lineup!

Africa…the animals!

Hawaii was amazing, so I’d go back there in a heartbeat. I would really, really like to go to Europe too!

We had planned out a trip to Ireland for summer of ’10 but airfare was crazy expensive at the time so we postponed Ireland and went to St Martin instead. I hope we do make it to Ireland some day, though. There were some cool walking and biking tours in the south/southwest part of the country. Germany would be cool because I learned the language. I think I’ve seen so few places off of this continent so I’d be happy to see any new place!

Wow I hope to one day have the opportunity to travel to all those places! If i had the chance I would travel to Asia specifically South Korea, I learned the language in college and i love the culture.

I have been dying to go to the Galapagos Islands.

I have been to Ireland twice (once in college as a poor student doing the Eurail pass thing and once in 2004 w/ my husband), and it’s my favorite place to go. I’d go back in a heartbeat. It would be really hard for me NOT to go there, in fact, even with the enticement of something new. I want my husband to see Paris (he’s never been) and we both want to go to India (my husband has been there twice, me never), but given the choice I’d go back to Ireland….maybe more of a running vacation this time….Can you imagine anything better than a run in some truly foul weather followed by a warm-up by the fire in a cozy B&B or some traditional music in a pub?

We loved Ireland! We actually looked for a race to do there for fun but the dates never worked out!!

Well I’m currently planning another trip to Europe again, and I’m trying to decide if it’s Greece, Italy, London, Turkey, all of them? Arghh! I can’t decide.
My huge destination vacation if I had lots of money and time would be India or Africa. I would like to go to Asia too. AHH, i want to go everywhere.
Alli @ alli learns life says
I would love to get to Vietnam & Thailand or South Africa maybe.
I have a looong list of places to see. So hard to choose.

Hey girl – I wonder if we’ve ever crossed paths….I grew up in Jersey and spent my summers on the Jersey shore (LBI, Avalon, and Stone Harbor), I went to SJU (I noticed your hubby’s shirt in a pic), and I ran the NJ Marathon a few years ago! Unfortunately I’m not in the area anymore (in AR)…I miss it!
I also LOVE to travel and my hubby and I are going to Hawaii for the first time in June – I can’t wait!

Anywhere in the world? Such a tough question 🙂 Brent and I are both teachers, so we’ve been able to take a month-long backpacking trip every summer that we’ve been together. We’ve done everything from road tripping around the northeastern US, to trekking through the Andes, to drinking and city-hopping around Germany. This summer will either be a month of playing in Turkey or a month of racing and backpacking around Scotland. I can’t wait!!
Kauai is gorgeous. Don’t forget to visit the Napali Coast!
Kristy says
It is a tough question! And, after hearing about your trips, I have total travel envy!
We are definitely hitting the Napali Coast!

Omg Hawaii is the best! I’d go back in a heartbeat! You won’t want to come home. If I could go anywhere, I think I would want to go to Alaska. It just seems so exotic.

Ahhhh! Colby and I are planning our honeymoon for next October in Hawaii!! I can’t wait to hear where you decide to go and everything! We are finishing up the trip in Kona and the Ironman will be that weekend… crazy…. I’m such a nice girlfriend. If I could go anywhere I’ve always said it would be Paris and I WILL get there someday!!
Kristy says
You are a nice girlfriend! Colby isn’t doing the Ironman is he?!?! It would be cool to watch it!

Hmmm…I’d like to go Germany/Austria/Prague/Poland as well as Spain/Greece/Morocco. And China. Ok, basically anywhere!
runningismagical says
Oh my gosh you guys are such travelers! My mom has always made traveling and experiencing other cultures such a big part of our lives. If I could plan a trip I’d either do Southeast Asia or go on an African Safari.

Where in Europe did you cruise? I am in the midst of planning our DREAM VACATION a European Cruise and would love suggestions! We’re stopping in London first then over to Barcelona, Cannes, Florence and Rome! My husband and I have never gone overseas and we want to do that before we start a family.

You’ve been to so many wonderful places. I love your upcoming trips. Hmm, let’s see, #1 trip is Spain because that’s where Pedro’s family has a beach house. It’s not near Barcelona though or Madrid. My in-laws were just there this past September and they flew out to Rome. The year before they were in Spain and flew to Paris. They loved both places. They did a lot though. Like they’d wake up at 6AM every morning for some tour. She said there was one day where they actually woke up at 8. LOL Uh, that’s still kind of early. But yeah, Spain is my first choice. Second choice is Thailand. Third choice is Germany or Amsterdam.
We went to Maui for our honeymoon and I absolutely LOVED it. 12-days of bliss. I had to run super early though (like 5am) b/c it would be so HOT by 7:00 AM and it’s super hilly. LOL

Kauai is my favorite place to go. My Mom was born and raised there. My favorite place to go there is Kalalau Valley and is also the place we spread her ashes. As soon as I get off the plane I’m relaxed and just love everything about it. ENJOY!
I’ve not been to Paris but London is second on my list of favorite travel spots!
