Bonjour! Just practicing.
Speaking of French, after 2 years of high school French and 3 semesters of college French, I can’t speak a lick of it. I can read some but once it leaves my mouth, it’s horribly butchered and completely wrong. The side of your brain (right?) that helps with foreign language learning is also the same side that prevents me from drawing a decent stick figure. But if you need me to explain the intricacies of the kidney to you, I’m your girl.
The past 2 weeks of running have been great! Quality runs, decent long runs, and…fun. Not worrying about pace and not hitting the track every week is freeing.
Since Boston, I’ve been kind of checked out of reality. Pretty easy to do with Boston, Kauai, and now London/Paris back-to-back. I must say the life of a gypsy (that’s what my co-worker called me yesterday) is sweet!
I have 2 runs planned while we are in London and Paris. I wish I could do more but our itinerary is jam packed. In London, walking along the Thames was on our list so we decided to make an early morning run out of it. Notice I said “we”? Matt agreed to join me and come out of his early retirement from running! In Paris, I plan on doing a solo run along the Seine while Matt goes to the French Open with his nephew. Fun, fun, fun!
Would your (non-running) significant other agree to go on a vacation run with you? Matt was technically a runner at one point and did a few HMs and a marathon but he hated every second of it. So he retired.
Are you fluent in another language? If so, I’m impressed. That’s definitely not in the cards for me!

Have a blast in Europe! I took four years of French in high school, and I also can’t speak a lick of it. When I went to Paris a few years ago, I tried speaking to people in French and they responded in English. 🙂

My french ability is probably on par with yours…
I love France though so i wish I were better! It’s only helpful if the other doesnt speak English at all….
Have fun!!

I took French all through college and studied abroad but I’m afraid my vocab and my grammar have suffered since then. Oh well, if I drink enough wine I find it all comes back…
Aie un bon temps à Paris!

My other half has said to me, “heaven forbid we go on vacation where a race isn’t involved.” I can’t help it if I’m a multi-tasker and love to combine two of my passions (running + traveling) together. 🙂 But he is up for the ride (and run). I love speaking Spanish and can have a conversation but expect for misunderstandings to ensue. Have fun in Paris/London! I wanted to do a recovery run after the Paris marathon but my legs were not having it. The Seine is beautiful!

I think there is no better way to enjoy a foreign city than to go on a run. So glad your husband went with you–all the better!
I used to be quite fluent in Spanish (spent a summer in Costa Rica) but like the cliche–if you don’t use it, you lose it!
Enjoy your trip!

My significant other ran one mile with me one time and swore never again, so it’s unlikely. We might run at the same time, maybe even in the same area, but that’s about it. One of my bucket list items is to learn another language, yet I’ve done nothing ever to make that happen. I’m still hopeful though. Have a fabulous vacation (again)!

I would want to do both – run and French Open! So jealous Matt is going to the finals!!!
Nope, definitely not fluent in another language. I need to learn spanish asap…

have such a fun time, Kristy! And running through those cities is such an awesome way to see them! When I was in London I ran through Hyde Park a few times and it was so pretty 🙂 Take lots of pics!

My cyclist husband once trained for and ran a marathon relay with me. His longest training run was 6 miles and he ended up running his 13.1 mile leg about 20 seconds faster than I ran mine! But he hasnt run since.
I took Latin in high school so that does not come in handy with regards to travel. I do know enough Spanish words to somewhat communicate if I have a Spanish-speaking patient but not enough that it would do any good for traveling to Spain. Unless I’d need to ask someone if they have any pain or tell them to bend their knee or something like that! 🙂
Have a great trip!!

I never thought I’d be able to speak a foreign language until I met my partner, who’s German (I also took French in high school and gave Spanish a shot too as an adult — both of which were major failures). Now we live in Germany and although I’ll never be mistaken for a native speaker, my German is pretty fluent. Apparently I just needed the right motivation and kick in the pants to put myself through the major challenge of learning a new language! And I know that if I was able to do it, anyone else can too. 🙂

Enjoy your gypsy time!
My husband and I have gone on a run-cation together before, but we run at different paces – does that count as “together”?

I took one quarter (I think that’s what it was called) of French in middle school. We were all required to take Spanish, French and German. I actually liked it, but stuck with Spanish since it’s closer to my language (and no I don’t speak my language). Pedro is fluent in Spanish so we try to speak at least half an hour a day in Spanish. We want Lili to be trilingual. Better to learn young.
So glad that you are able to get some runs out there and with the hubby. Can’t wait to read more.
XO

My husband used to be a runner, but he has (permanent) injuries that prevent him from running without pain so I don’t pester him to go with me. He would love a trip to France though! He speaks French and German so he’d be very useful on a European vacation. 🙂
