Busy Busy and Boston Week 7 Recap

February 21, 2012 by Kristy 11 Comments

This week is busy busy. Lots of miles, lots of coaching, a few other appointments, Hawk’s birthday (yes, we celebrate), and that little 9 to 5 thing I do. My planner is filled with ridiculous notes like “bring medical records” (to my doctor’s appointment) and “prep for cleaners” (we have house cleaners that come monthly and I try to make cleaning as easy as possible by decluttering as much as I can). If I don’t have it written down, it’s pretty much wiped from my memory.

Last week I entered the 50s (well, right at 50) in terms of mileage. I now see the appeal in running 6 days per week. 50+ miles is tough to tackle just running 5 days, even with a “long” long run. I’m not ready to jump to 6 days yet, since that would mean no rest days (6 runs + 1 barre class). That’s completely absurd. I love my 1 day of complete rest. And I love barre too. Even though I only take it once per week, I’m definitely feeling stronger. I guess weekly runs of 9-10 miles are going to stick around for awhile.

Boston Week 7 Recap
MON: rest (much needed after the barre class from hell)
TUE: 10 miles speed work – 6×800 at 10K pace, finishing with 2 miles at 8:13 pace.
WED: 8 miles easy
THU: 10 miles tempo – 6 miles at 8:05 pace (8:13, 8:17, 8:09, 8:11, 8:09, 8:12).  My legs were not-so-happy during this run.
FRI: rest
SAT: 14 miles at 8:29 average pace
SUN: 8 miles easy

50 miles total for the week! Finally!

Do you use a paper planner or your phone? I cannot give up my paper planner, even though I have an iPhone. I’m kinda old school in that I like to write it down and check it off.

How many days per week do you run? I always stick with 5 days because it has always worked best. But now I have to get creative with my increased mileage.

I’ve got a google calendar that’s synced with my phone, but each week I make a daily to-do list on a little yellow legal pad. That’s my read planning bible 🙂

Oops – “real” planning bible, not “read!”

Wow, that’s impressive! I’ve started limiting my running to 3 to 4 days max per week only because I feel like I put myself at risk for injury when I go over that….although I personally would love to just go out and run everyday instead of mixing it up 🙂

And I did finally give up my paper planner, but I always makes lists and have that around with me!

I have to write things down on paper, though I don’t use an actual planner–just post-its everywhere.

Nice job on hitting the 50 mile mark. I’m also with you on the rest day, though I run 6 days a week since running is my only real activity. I don’t know how the folks that never take a day off do it!

PAPER PLANNER ALL THE WAY. I love my “paper brain.” I guess I just like writing things down and doodling in my planner, too.

I run 5 days per week, but my all-time high mileage is ~40 mpw so I typically don’t need an extra day.

I guess I’m sort of a hybrid on the planning front–I use Google calendar. I’ve definitely felt more organized with it because I can’t “forget” it (a problem for me with either paper or phone).

And I’m just like you–I run five days a week (have strength training on two of those same days), do a spin class on the sixth day and have a total rest day on Sunday. Maybe someday I’ll ramp up to 6 days, but no need for that yet. I think I need the rest, and yeah, I do have this thing called a “job” and these two things called “kids” that I have to be responsible for, too. :^)

I run 3 to 4 days and then lift one day, then run 3 to 4 days (etc.) so that probably averages out to running 5 1/2 days a week. My lifting days are my “days off” so to speak, since I really don’t have a day where I do nothing. Most lifting days I also add in 45-60 minutes of step, because I find it really stregthens my hams and gluts way more than running which has made me much faster on hills.

OMG I am all about the paper planner. I love it. I go no where without it. Glad to hear you’re in the same boat, because I feel really old school! I think I was doing 5 days a week even with the Pfitz plan (which topped out around 55 mpw) but I was doing really high mileage in the middle of the week. It was pretty tough to fit it all in!

I love google cal. To me it’s the best thing ever.

Really impressive to me that you fit in so much mileage only running 5 days a week. I need that 6th day to reach my mileage goals!! I wouldn’t go without a day a rest though which is why I prkb don’t cross train…bad. If you do want to run 6 days any way you cod double on the day of your barre class so u still keep your rest day?

holy sh*t, woman. That is quite an impressive running week. Boston has nothing on you!!! You go girl.

I’ve been having this debate with my planner. I can’t seem to give up my moleskin either. I love it. I did type everything into my iCalendar on my iPhone. LOL But yeah, I can’t seem to lose the paper!!!

It is really hard to get 50+ with just 5 days of running! During 50 mile training I did, but that was with a long run + 10 miles the next day. Now that I’m not doing a long run, I’m running 6 days a week, so it’s a lot easier to rack up the miles!

I love that you celebrate your dog’s birthday!
