So that Boston itch remains UNscratched. What next? Funny you should ask…
Two weeks ago Matt put the idea in my head to search around for another marathon prior to September (when Boston 2012 registration opens up). This way I wouldn’t have so much pressure to BQ at the NJ Marathon (especially since I didn’t train to BQ). I told you he was my biggest cheerleader and supporter.
After Sunday’s race, I didn’t think I was mentally up for doing this again. But a changed perspective has me thinking that if I don’t go for it again, I will regret it.
I found a somewhat local marathon on September 11th, the day before Boston 2012 registration opens. I had to laugh because their FAQs clearly state:
Per the Boston Athletic Association: A qualifying race run on September 11, 2011 can be used to register for the Boston Marathon as soon as September 12, 2011. The Boston Athletic Association verifies races online through our Results page.
Well, that’s all I need to know. So I’m in! Sign me up 🙂
This actually works out well time-wise for me. I get to take a brief break, go to Ireland, and not worry about training (this makes Matt very happy). Then when I get back I will still have a full 15 weeks to train. And you bet I’ll be training to BQ this time around!

Yipee!
I love that you are already planning. 🙂 I do that too (usually less than 24 hours after the last F-bomb leaves my mouth on the race course and I swear I will never run another marathon again!)
I hadn’t heard of that marathon. I looks hilly, even though it says net descent. You gonna incorporate hill training?
Kristy says
I forgot to tell you that I let out many, many F-bombs on Sunday. You would be proud 🙂
I will incorporate lots of hills in my training. It’s a newer marathon but I ran a half up in that area a few years ago and it’s not too bad. The reviews on marathonguide aren’t too shabby. Some people mention hills and others say it’s a great BQ race. I think there will be lots of people trying to BQ at this race. I analyzed the results from last year (I’m a nerd) and approx. 42% finished sub-4:00.
It’s funny, as much as I hate hills, I didn’t particularly enjoy running a completely flat marathon on Sunday. I think I need some uphills and some downhills. I can’t believe I just said that!

I think it would be so cool to run any race on 9/11, let alone a BQ marathon! I can’t wait to read about your training 🙂
Kristy says
I did think of that Kara and it will be *very* cool! With 9/11 falling on a Sunday, I’m sure there will be plenty of races.

One of my best friends just signed up for this one as a BQ also! Good luck! I’m looking for one a little closer before the Marine Corp in October but maybe I’ll just wait and focus on that..how far between do you recommend for rest time, etc??
Kristy says
Really?! Yeah! That’s good to hear. I think I will be running with many BQ hopefuls 🙂
For beginner marathoners, a good rule of thumb is to allow a full month of recovery post-marathon (1 day for each mile ran). For intermediate/advanced marathoners it can be less. But it all depends on how hard you trained and how fast your body recovers.
MCM is so fun and definitely a PR course. If you have a goal in mind, I would focus on the MCM solely. Or you could always sign up for a marathon and use it as a training run (only running 20-22 miles of the race). Of course, that’s the expensive way of training but it’s GREAT practice!

This is great girl! You are definitely going to conquer this race, and on a day filled with such emotion and memory!

It will be so incredible to run on 9/11! Thanks!

I think it’s a sign… You found a race that local and the last day that you can qualify for BQ… You have to go for it!
Can’t wait to read the training!!!! ;o)

Ha ha….very good point!!!!

Nice!! Glad when things work out like that. What marathon is it? Im from new york!
Kristy says
It’s called the Leigh Valley Marathon (or Via Marathon). It’s a point-to-point course starting in Allentown, PA and ending in Easton, PA. The course was design by Bart Yasso! What could be better!

Lots of time to train and get ready. You should do great. Good luck

Nice! You will still have a great base from your NJ training and Ireland will be a great mental and physical break between seasons. Crush it!

That is awesome! I am a newbie, but definitely finding that signing up for races in the future is keeping me motivated!

How sweet that the race is the DAY before Boston registration. You totally have that BQ time in the bag!

This is awesome!! Talk about coming down to the wire! 😉 I’m so glad you have your sights set on another race for that BQ. You were so close in you last marathon – you are going to get this!!
