I guess January is officially here because they are calling for a wintry mix on Saturday. I’m freaking out because I have a 17-miler to get done. If I have to slap on YakTrax and slow down, I won’t be happy, but so be it. I can’t get annoyed over things out of my control.
Anyway….today’s Five for Friday (I act like I do this every week…I don’t) is 4 races that I would love to do and 1 race I’ll never do, in no particular order.
1. JFK 50-Miler: Ultras are where I’m headed after I scratch the Boston itch. So long speed work, hello super long runs! I would love to do this race some day, especially after reading Kara’s recap last year.
2. Big Sur Marathon: I wouldn’t want to race this marathon but run it for fun, take pictures, and enjoy the scenery. And yes, I wish I was doing Boston to Big Sur!
3. A marathon in San Francisco: Nike Women’s or the San Francisco Marathon, it really doesn’t matter. I just want to run in the city that I love so much.
4. Another World Marathon Major: I’ve done NYC and will soon be done Boston, but I’d love to run Chicago or London.
5. A marathon I will never run: Disney Marathon. I’m kinda anti-Disney. I have no desire to run near or in the “most magical place on earth”.
Any races you would like to do? Any ones you have no desire to run?

I’m going to run Chicago this year if you’d like to join 🙂 big sur and both SF marathons are on my list for when i move back there. London, Boston and Berlin i’d love to do at some stage. And I may actually be doing my first ultra after Chicago – E and I are thinking TNF endurance challenge 50k in SF. We’ll see though if my body will let me!

I’m with you on the Disney thing. Plus, they are really pricey and start at horrible hours of the day.
I, too, would love to do Big Sur (probably the half) and take pictures and just enjoy the race.

I love how they market the Disney races as like Princess races or some crap like that. Because, really, nothing says delicate flower like swoob. And swass. That’s not just me, right?

Now, by Disney Marathon, does that include Goofy Challenge? I would love to do the Goofy Challenge at least once in my life. Perhaps once Lili is older, I can kill two birds with one stone. Run the Goofy Challenge and then take her to the park. Boy, that will burn holes in my pocket.
Oh, I want do the Women’s Nike in San Francisco. I’m sure it’s crazy hilly, but it’s beautiful out there. I put my name in the half a few years ago and was bummed that I didn’t get in. I was so looking forward to getting a Tiffany’s gift from the hot firefighters. Ooh-la-la.
Another race I’d love to do is the RnR San Diego Marathon in early June. It’s usually around my birthday. I was going to sign up for it on my 30th birthday, but then Pedro proposed the year before and we decided Hawaii was a better honeymoon. LoL
Wishing you lots of luck on your 17-mile run tomorrow. I hope you don’t get hit too bad with the snow. I’ll follow up on your update tomorrow.

I love doing international marathons (Paris on the docket for April). One that I came across yesterday: http://www.great-wall-marathon.com. Running up the Great Wall? Never say never, but it just didn’t appeal to me. I want to do the Nike SF runs sometime! Not going to lie, the Tiffany’s necklace at the end is a big factor in wanting to do it. 🙂

Loved reading your list. Would caution against “running” the Nike full. TNT walkers start 1 hour earlier on same course w/zero enforced corrals. Also half/full share course and same start time. My 10 min pace group began AFTER 12+ groups. I expected 4:30 based on prior halfs just over 2 hrs. Instead, I finished in 5:12. Way too much bobbing/weaving and people. However, the scenery, comraderie, swag (Tiffany necklace) and pre/post expo are fabulous. Go with the expectation you will go slow and be surrounded until the half splits off. So although I thought I’d never do another one, I now am determined to beat 4:30 and need to find the right race this season.

I just do not get why people are so obsessed with Disney World/Disney Land/Disney races…I wanted to go when I was like, 7, but now it just seems silly! Maybe my thoughts will change once (if?) I have kids…
I’d love to run a flat marathon sometime..Chicago, London, or Berlin!

I think I am going to do the San Francisco half this year….
At some point I want to do all the majors but I’m not really in a hurry. I actually think i like smaller races more. The Napa Marathon is one I’d like to do one day. I’d also like to do Big Sur. Both California marathons….hmmmm. I’d also like to do the French Riviera Marathon (love that part of the world) and the Marathon du Medoc (wine tasting at water stops!)
Claire says
a friend of mine did the marathon du medoc last year and had an incredible time! and of course you know how i feel about california 🙂 ah i miss it!

This is a good list! I’m with you on Big Sur – I think that would be awesome! Others I really want to do are San Diego and I’d like to do NYC for the experience. If I ever get my time down enough where I think I could qualify for Boston, I’d like to run CIM or Chicago to qualify. I can’t believe you are interested in moving onto ultras! I have no desire to go further than 26.2 🙂

My #1 marathon I want to run is BOSTON! 🙂
Marathon on the HAIL NAW list is Pike’s Peak. I mean… major props to anyone who does that, but dang, how does that not destroy you? Massive uphill followed by massive downhill? No thanks!
Terzah says
When I get my own Boston itch scratched (sigh), I am going to be all about TRAIL running. I want to do the Pikes Peak Ascent (I’m with you on the Pikes Peak Marathon–no thanks–I’m sure I’d trip and die on the downhill part). There’s another race in Western Colorado called the Imogene Pass Run that I really want to do.
And among road races, I’d love to do Big Sur too. Once I get Boston out of my system, I’m going to be all about scenery.
Aron says
Big Sur is definitely a MUST do 🙂 and SFM > Nike all the way… but the Tiffany’s is fun. COME TO CALI!!!
Have a great 17 miler!
Kara says
You will LOVE the JFK 50. Unless it snows or something crazy for your year. 🙂
I really want to do some of the crazy ultras like Leadville and Western States. 🙂

I’ve read only good things about the Big Sur Marathon! I bet it’s super scenic and really tough…thats def on my to-do list.
